Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is apparently still looking for depth (or more) at the tackle position with junior Grant Newsome having to redshirt this year, and a Miami grad transfer could fit the bill.
Miami (FLa.) tackle Sunny Odogwu, 6-8 and 325 pounds, was in town yesterday and enjoyed his visit.
Odogwu suffered a season ending ankle injury last year after working his way into the starting lineup. The Nigerian-born lineman has a very interesting story about coming to the United States, having grown up in a tiny, remote village in Nigeria, according to the Palm Beach Post, and came to America with few possessions. He was helped along the way by scholarships and foster families.
He never even slept in a bed until age 16.
“Sunny and I had a good conversation, and he informed me that he feels his best opportunity to get the most playing time would be at another school,” Miami coach Mark Richt said in press release. “Sunny has been a great teammate and leader for this program, and we will miss him.”
Odogwu will visit UCLA and has Mississippi State and others on his list.
"Sunny has the best attitude of anybody I’ve ever been around," Miami offensive line coach Stacy Searels told the Post. "He loves the game. He loves his teammates. He loves his coaches. He tells me, 'I love you, coach,' and I’m beating the fool out of him out there."
“You never catch me just sitting there,” Odogwu said. “I love this game. I love my new coaches. My teammates. It’s unreal. So I’m going to be me. I’m Sunny. That’s what I’m going to do, bro. I’m never going to change.”
