Former two-time All-American Jake Long has announced his retirement from football, multiple injuries taking their toll.
Long, a the first pick in the 2008 NFL Draft following a stellar career at the University of Michigan, made his announcement on Twitter. Here is what he had to say.
The announcement concluded with the mention of Michigan football and his head coach here, Lloyd Carr.
Long noted: "You gave me one of the greatest honors of playing football at the University of Michigan. The way you coached and the lessons you taught your players are what prepared me for the NFL and beyond. I love you coach, thank you."
Long proved a multi-year Pro Bowl performer with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him. He later played with the St. Louis Rams and the Atlanta Falcons, before signing on with the Minnesota Vikings. He was unable to come back from a torn Achilles, and opted instead for retirement.
