Michigan running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley has agreed to jump back to the pros, going to the Jacksonville Jaguars as running backs coach.
The former All-American running back for Michigan has a son, Tyrone Wheatley Jr., who is a redshirt freshman on the U-M roster. The elder Wheatley coached on Jim Harbaugh's staff for two seasons.
Doug Marrone hired Wheatley away, and said this in a release: "I am excited to have Tyrone join our staff and work with our running backs. I have worked with him for five years and know the type of leader and teacher that he is. He is an exceptional coach and will bring out the best in his players. He brings a charisma, attitude and Super Bowl playing experience to the staff that will be vital as we enter the 2017 season."
Wheatley was earlier a candidate for the Western Michigan head coaching job. He becomes the second U-M coach from the offensive staff to leave this offseason, following the departure of quarterbacks/receivers coach and passing coordinator Jedd Fisch, who moved on to UCLA.
