Michigan redshirt junior quarterback was one of 30 FBS players named to the Davey O’Brien Award watch list on Wednesday afternoon, given annually to the nation’s top quarterback.
This is the second watch list Speight has landed on in the last week, as he was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list, given to the top offensive player in college football.
In his first season as a starter last year, Speight threw for 2,538 yards and 18 touchdowns, while completing 61.6 percent of his passes.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Peters and fifth-year senior John O’Korn are expected to be Speight’s biggest competitors for the starting job heading into 2017.
Only two other quarterbacks from the Big Ten appeared on the 2017 Davey O’Brien watch list – Ohio State fifth-year senior J.T. Barrett and Penn State redshirt junior Trace McSorley.
Former Clemson star Deshaun Watson was the recipient of the award in both 2015 and 2016.
The 2017 winner will be announced on Feb. 19, 2018, in Fort Worth, Tex.
