Michigan Wolverines football freshman linebacker William Mohan entered his name into the transfer portal this evening, marking the second Maize and Blue player of the day to do so (redshirt junior safety Hunter Reynolds did this afternoon).

Mohan was a freshman on last year's team and played in just one game, competing at former defensive coordinator Don Brown's signature viper spot in the season-opening win at Minnesota Oct. 24.

Mohan made one tackle in the victory and did not appear in another game all year. He came to U-M as a four-star prospect from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was recruited to play the viper spot.

With Brown gone and co-defensive coordinators Mike Macdonald and Mo Linguist now running Michigan's defense, however, the viper spot no longer exists in the Wolverines' scheme.

Mohan came to Ann Arbor as part of a loaded linebacking class, residing as one of five players at the position in the 2020 haul — Kalel Mullings, Nikhai Hill-Green, Cornell Wheeler and Osman Savage were the other four.

With experienced players in redshirt junior Josh Ross and redshirt sophomore Michael Barrett, most notably, returning to Ann Arbor in 2021, Mohan wasn't necessarily expected to see much playing time next fall.

Eleven scholarship linebackers still reside on Michigan's roster following Mohan's departure.
