Jayden Denegal is coming off a monster performance.
The three-star 2022 Michigan quarterback commit was nearly flawless as he passed for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns and led Apple Valley (Calif.) High to a 47-13 blowout win over Phelan (Calif.) Serrano.
“It was a great win,” Denegal said. “We had a good game on offense. The offensive line played great. The receivers played great. The defense had two small mistakes, which led to 13 points. But overall, everybody played great tonight. We had to make a point. That team was supposed to be hot.”
Denegal earned an offer from Michigan while on campus this summer and committed on the spot. He picked U-M over offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Georgia, Michigan State, Oregon State, Utah and a handful of others.
Since then, Denegal has remained completely solid to Michigan. And that hasn’t changed.
“I’m still 100 percent committed,” Denegal said. “It’s just home. I really love Ann Arbor. I love what the team is doing. Nobody can stop them running the ball. Run it until they stop it and then we can open up the air attack.”
Denegal’s commitment to Michigan grew even stronger following his official visit last month. Denegal took in Michigan’s win over Rutgers and got an in-depth look at the program, facilities and Ann Arbor.
“It was super fun,” Denegal said. “I got out to Ann Arbor and loved the people. I love the coaching staff and the environment. I can’t wait to get out there again. The people and the atmosphere stood out to me the most. I loved being at the game. How they take care of their athletes was a big thing for me.”
Michigan went out and hired a new quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss this offseason. Denegal impressed Weiss at a summer workout, and the two have developed a strong relationship throughout the recruiting process.
“Coach Weiss is a great guy,” Denegal said. “He’s the main guy I’ve been talking to during the recruiting process, so that’s my guy. I think he knows the position really well. He treats all the quarterbacks the same. He just knows the game so well.”
Denegal added that he also has a bond with new Michigan Director of Player Personnel Courtney Morgan, who is originally from California.
“Courtney is a great guy as well,” Denegal said. “My dad is really close to him. He’s doing a great job recruiting out here on the West Coast. He knows where I’m from and the people around here. That’s pretty cool.”
Denegal is looking to make a return trip to Michigan later this season. He is set to graduate in December and enroll early at U-M.
“I’m ready to get in there and get on the depth chart,” Denegal said. “Learning the playbook is big for me.”
At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Denegal is ranked as the No. 22 pro-style quarterback in the country and No. 32 overall prospect in the state of California, per Rivals.com.
