In a stunning development, Michigan has landed top 100 point guard Xavier Simpson of Lima, Ohio. Simpson, keeping the element of surprise in play when he texted a final list of Miami, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa State Wednesday morning, chose the Wolverines at a 2:30 press conference at his school.
KingJamesShootingStars.com, his AAU program, was the first to report the news.
The 5-11 Simpson, Rivals.com's No. 87 senior nationally, enjoyed an outstanding summer. The four-star prospect visited Michigan on his way home from Wisconsin over the weekend, at which point he was offered and told the Wolverines would accept his commitment instead of waiting on Detroit U-D Jesuit's Cassius Winston (6-0, No. 28).
Winston had been on the Michigan campus a number of times, and the Wolverines were considered one of his favorites. He was slated to visit Sept. 19, but there were rumblings he was going to push it back a week. Instead, the Wolverines moved on to land a player who capped off his summer by averaging 19.2 points and seven assists per game for King James at Nike Peach Jam, the Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) finals.
"He makes guys around him better," his father and coach, Quincy Simpson, said. "A lot of guys like playing with him because he's not selfish. He's able to defend baseline to baseline. He understands the position and he's a coach on the floor. If he's asked to score, he has demonstrated that he can do that, as well."
He was outstanding at the NBA Players' Association Camp this summer, TheWolfpacker.com and Rivals.com analyst Jacey Zembal said today.

"Simpson used the NBPA Camp as a national coming out party of sorts," he said. " His team was missing two of its listed point guards, and he took control, and playing with five-star post Thon Maker never hurts when it comes to having the spotlight shine. Simpson showed toughness, a floater game and solid outside shooting in helping his camp squad reach the title game.
"Simpson followed up in July, and I got to see him play a spirited game with his King James squad against a loaded St. Louis Eagles team. Simpson again showcased he belonged as a top-notch point guard with 22 points in a 88-78 loss."
Watch for more on Simpson in the hours and days to come. Special thanks to GoldandBlack.com's Brian Neubert and Zembal for the film below.
