Michigan Basketball: Adrien Nunez Found His Perfect Fit In Ann Arbor
Brooklyn St. Thomas More shooting guard Adrien Nunez was a late bloomer, not even starting for his high school team last year. Michigan head coach John Beilein is famous for turning players like him into outstanding players, one of the reasons Nunez chose the Wolverines over Penn State, Boston College, Texas A&M and others.
Nunez proved to be one of the elite snipers in his class, Rivals.com’s Corey Evans said in the days leading up to his recruitment, and he put on a display for Beilein during a visit days before his weekend trip to Ann Arbor.
U-M’s assistant coaches also got to see it during a workout.
“Nunez is one of the top shooters in America,” Evans said. “He becomes Michigan's fourth class of 2018 commitment, amounting to a top-10 group nationally.”
He joins point guard David DeJulius and forwards Brandon Johns and Ignas Brazdeikis on U-M’s commitment list. Another, four-star power forward Colin Castleton, is slated to decide Wednesday after his visit, and Michigan appears to be in a good spot there, too.
For Nunez, the weekend visit sealed the deal.
“I liked Ann Arbor,” he said. “It really felt like a city, and I’m from the city … it was like I was right at home. That was a big part of it. Also, I can see how they coached guys like Tim Hardaway. His progression, what they did with him and can do with my progression … and they made me feel at home.
“Everything, the whole playing style, shooting, cutting, all that stuff factored in.”
The coaches were straightforward and direct, he added, when it came to discussing his role. He saw all aspects of the university on his trip, and as he said going into the visit, it checked all the boxes.
“It’s one of the top public universities in the country. They just won the Big Ten. The facilities are top of the line, and their playing style really fits mine.,” he said. “It was just overall a great fit.”
Nunez got to hang with many players on U-M’s current team, too, and felt at home.
“The comfortability around the players, the academics and then the coaches and how they’re treating you [is important],” he said.
“And of course, the basketball program.”
One that's had great success recently, and at which he’ll spend three or four years in the near future after signing in November.
