Two of Michigan’s Class of 2016 signees – point guard Xavier Simpson and center Jon Teske - hit buzzer beaters within the last week to lead their teams to wins. Here are the commitment updates, including video and more, of U-M’s signees and pledges …
Xavier Simpson, 5-11 PG, Lima, Ohio, Senior
Rivals.com four-star, No. 86 player nationally
Simpson sank a 12-foot, step-back jumper with one second left to give Lima Senior a 54-52 win over Lima Central Catholic before a sold-out crowd, limaohio.com reported. the
“I had a pretty good idea how much [time] was left because I started walking him down with five, six seconds left and tried to get a reaction and hopefully, I could make a move and react in the opposite direction,” Simpson said. “I was just happy I made the shot and happy we got the victory.”
Lima Senior had the ball and called timeout with 15 seconds left, the game tied at 22. With five seconds left, Simpson reportedly gave a jab step and pulled back, jabbed forward, then let loose a one-handed, step-back jumper from 12 feet.
“I tried to get his reaction, but he played great defense,” Simpson said. “Then, he kind of jumped a little bit and I had to throw up a shot. But, actually, my father [Lima Senior coach Quincey Simpson] helps me practice those one-handed quick shots like that.”
“When the clock got down to seven, I saw they weren’t going to jump to a zone and that point, it was pretty easy to know who would take that last shot,” Quincey Simpson said. “He’s been in that situation a million times before on a million different levels. He wants that shot.”
As the scoreboard hit zero, the Spartans’ fans flooded the floor in celebration.
“Big-time players make big-time plays,” LCC coach Frank Kill said. “I was taking my chances with one of our best defenders. Ethan can play him as tough as anybody and he did, and X (Xavier) made the shot over him. … Lima got a show tonight and for six bucks, that’s the cheapest entertainment they’re going to get.”
Lima Senior, ranked No. 2 in the state in Division I, is now 13-0.
Simpson finished with a game-high 22 points.
Simpson was averaging 28.1 points per game as of Jan. 27. He struggled shooting the ball but scored 18 points on 5-of-23 shooting in a 52-44 win over Toledo St. John’s Jan. 22.
Ibi Watson, 6-5 SG, Pickerington, Ohio, Central
Rivals.com three-star prospect nationally
Watson is averaging 20.1 points per game through 18 games for 14-4 Central (8-2 in the OCC-Ohio Division).
Watson scored 24 points, making two triples in an 80-62 win over Reynoldsburg Jan. 22. He followed up with 18 in a 61-54 victory over Westerville South at the Sullinger Classic and 14 in a 69-52 win over rival Pickerington North Jan. 26.
Jon Teske, 7-0 C, Medina, Ohio
Rivals.com four-star, No. 108 player nationally
Medina is now 12-5, 7-2 in conference (tied for first with two others) behind Teske’s 16.0 points per game. The Bees lost 77-74 at Lorain Jan. 19 with Teske finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and six blocked shots. The mood was better Jan. 22 when Teske hit a turnaround jumper at the buzzer following a 75-foot inbounds pass to beat Solon, 60-58.
“We practice that play every day, so we were confident that we could do it,” Teske told the Medina Gazette. “We realized there was enough time left, and all we had to do was execute. Jimmy [Daw] made a great pass and I was able to make the shot.”
The triumph kept Medina (12-4, 7-1) in a tie with Brunswick atop the GCC standings. Teske notched the game-tying dunk with 48 seconds on the clock, then stole the ball under the Solon basket with five ticks left, the Gazette reported. He initially tried to find his guard before calling timeout.
“Jon is such a smart player and he gave us extra life,” Medina coach Chris Hassinger said. “We knew that [Daw] is a good passer and when Solon lined up, our coaching staff said, ‘We can pull this off.’ That’s exactly what happened.”
Teske finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the win. He notched 14 points and 12 caroms in a shocking, 62-59 loss at Strongsville Jan. 26.
Austin Davis, 6-10 PF, Onsted, Mich.
Rivals.com three-star prospect nationally
Davis and Onsted have improve to 10-0 behind Davis’ 21.3 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, numbers that would have been higher had Davis not sat for much of the second half in a number of games due to blowouts.
Davis notched 33 points and 22 rebounds, adding five assists and four blocks in a Jan. 22 win at Erie-Mason, knocking down 15 of 18 shots.
Jordan Poole, 6-3 SG, Milwaukee Rufus King
Rivals.com four-star prospect, No. 104 junior nationally
Poole scored 13 in one half of play to help King snap a seven-game losing streak with a 102-50 win over Milwaukee Pulaski Jan. 21. He followed up with 20 in an 80-53 win over Milwaukee Bradley Tech Jan. 25.
