Kalamazoo (Mich.) Central, led by Michigan's Mr. Basketball and U-M signee Isaiah Livers, bowed out of the state Class A Tournament. Livers added Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year to his list of honors but won't win a state title.
Central lost 66-46 to Grand Rapids Christian K-Central. Livers, the 2017 Mr. Basketball winner and future Michigan Wolverine, scored all 11 of his points in the second half and added 10 rebounds, Mlive.com reported.
Livers traveled to Detroit Monday to accept the award with Nichols, his teammates and his family. Nichols said receiving the honor can be a distraction for high school seniors, but in the end, he took pride in his team’s effort and credited Christian for a quality win.
“It can be (overwhelming),” Nichols said of receiving the Mr. Basketball award. “They’re 17 to 18-year-old kids, and to come off of that emotional high, it definitely can be a distraction, but my guys left it all on the floor, and that’s all I can ask for,” he said. “Tonight I just have to tip my hat to Grand Rapids Christian.”
