Michigan Basketball: Justin Ahrens Talks U-M Offer

Michigan is trending for three-star (and rising?) wing Justin Ahrens following the Ohio native’s recent visit, after which Ahrens put the Wolverines in his top six.

His list includes Big Ten schools Ohio State and Purdue, though Michigan seems to have surged.

“It’s obviously a good offer and a good fit for me, I feel like,” Ahrens said after his weekend visit. “I like them a lot. I really think I fit in there well, and Coach [John] Beilein does, too.”

Ahrens went to a Michigan game when his brother, Kyle (now at MSU) was being recruited, but he didn't get the full experience. That changed over the weekend, when he saw campus, the academic center, where he’d live and the facilities. He watched a practice and saw how the team got after it, meeting the players afterward.

“It was pretty intense,” he said. “Up tempo. All the players came up and talked to me before practice. I know 'X' (Xavier Simpson) and got to know the other guys.”

Ahrens was once committed to Ohio State, and he still has the Buckeyes on his list. Since re-opening he’s fielded offers from Xavier, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Missouri, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and several others, in addition to being re-offered by Ohio State's new coaching staff.

He’s an elite shooter, but he said he runs the floor very well, too, and plays above the rim.

“I feel I fit there really well, and Coach Beilein agreed,” he said. “They play a bunch of ball screens, spread the floor and get the ball to their shooters.”

Ahrens is in no hurry to decide and plans to take official visits this fall. One of those will be to Michigan, putting the Wolverines in a very competitive spot against the others recruiting him.
