Michigan junior center Moritz Wagner will likely be a gametime decision Saturday after suffering an ankle injury Tuesday at Texas.
Wagner has started every game for U-M the last two years and hasn’t missed any in his career due to injury, but he suffered a mild ankle sprain while driving the lane in a 59-52 win over the Longhorns. He didn’t return for the last seven minutes, limping to the locker room before returning to the bench.
"Today, he did a little bit of stuff," Beilein said Friday. "He's not at 100 percent, that's for sure. I'll wait and see how he feels tomorrow.
"I don't anticipate anything right now. I anticipate waiting to see what he feels like tomorrow, whether he's out in warm-ups or whether he's not in warm-ups … we’ll see how he feels."
Wagner is Michigan’s leading scorer, averaging 15.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He participated in some drills Friday, but not all.
Sophomore and 7-1 center Jon Teske (3.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in in 11.2 minutes per game) would likely step in at the five if Wagner couldn’t go, while redshirt freshman Austin Davis could also get more run. He’s played in only five games this season.
Sophomore point guard Zavier Simpson said the team would rally around Teske if the big man got the nod.
"It's always good to play with him because he can roll (off ball screens)," Simpson said. "And he's seven-foot, so you can throw it up and he'll catch the passes.
"With Moe, 10 times out of 10 he's going to want to pop [outside] after setting a screen). With Jon, sometimes he pops; sometimes he rolls. Jon has great feel for the game."
The 9-3 Wolverines will face the 4-6 Titans as part of a doubleheader in Detroit as part of the 2017 Hitachi College Basketball Showcase at Little Caesers Arena. Michigan State plays Oakland in the second game.
