Former Michigan standouts Rudy Tomjanovich and Chris Webber are among the finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The 2017 class will be announced April 3 at a press conference in Phoenix just before the NCAA Championship game.
Others up for the honor included NBA referee Hugh Evans, Rebecca Lobo, Rollie Massimino, Tracy McGrady, Sidney Moncrief, Kim Mulkey Bill Self.
Previous finalists up for election include high school coach Robert Hughes, Muffet McGraw, Bo Ryan, 10-time AAU National Champions Wayland Baptist University and Tim Hardaway Sr.
Webber averaged 20.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game over a 15-year NBA career with Golden State, Washington, Sacramento, Philadelphia and Detroit. He was a five-time All-Star. He led Michigan to back-to-back national championship game appearances and was a consensus first-team All-American before becoming the No. 1 NBA Draft pick in 1993.
Webber was first eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2014.
Tomjanovich led Michigan in scoring in each of his three seasons (1968-1970), finishing with 1,808 points in his career, seventh on the career scoring list. He averaged 30 points and 15 rebounds per game and earned All-America honors in 1970 and became the No. 2 overall pick in that season's NBA draft.
Tomjanovich averaged 17.4 points and 8.1 rebounds over an 11-year career and went 527-416 as an NBA head coach, leading the Houston Rockets to the NBA championship in 1995 and 1996. He is currently nominated for the Hall of Fame as a coach and has been for the last nine years.
