Michigan sophomore point guard Xavier Simpson has changed the spelling of his first name to "Zavier," which is his given birthname.

Simpson, who was often referred to simply as "X" last season, will obviously need to find a new nickname.

The sophomore played a minor role last year for the Wolverines, averaging just 8.7 minutes per contest and 1.6 points.

He is expected to back up Ohio fifth-year senior transfer point guard Jaaron Simmons in Michigan's backcourt this winter.

Simpson was rated as the No. 65 overall player in the country out of Lima, Ohio, and was the headline recruit in the Wolverines' 2016 class.

Michigan tips off its 2017-2018 campaign at home against North Florida on Nov. 11.
