Michigan DB Hunter Reynolds Enters Name Into NCAA Transfer Portal

Michigan Wolverines football's roster just got a little bit lighter, with redshirt junior linebacker Hunter Reynolds entering his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal Monday afternoon.

Reynolds, a former walk-on, appeared in 20 games during his three years in Ann Arbor, totaling 22 tackles, including two stops for loss.

"After discussing with my family, I have decided to enter my name in the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining," Reynolds wrote on Twitter.

"I want to thank [head] Coach [Jim] Harbaugh for giving me an opportunity to be a Wolverine, as well as [former defensive coordinator] Coach [Don] Brown, [former safeties] Coach [Chris] Partridge, [former cornerbacks] Coach [Mike] Zordich and [analyst] Coach [Aashon] Larkins. In addition to them, I want to thank all of the other coaches, training staff and academic support staff for helping me grow as a player and as a person.

"To all my teammates, ya'll are like brothers to me, and I know y'all are going to do big things next year. I am truly grateful for my time in Ann Arbor and look forward to this next chapter in my life."

The South Orange, N.J., native got his biggest opportunity during the shortened 2020 campaign, appearing in all six games, registering 16 tackles and one tackle for loss. Eleven of his tackles came in the last game of the year against Penn State, with fifth-year senior Brad Hawkins having been injured during that contest.

He saw action on 130 defensive snaps at safety — in addition to 52 plays on special teams — and actually graded out as the fifth-best Michigan defender on the season (71.5) according to PFF. In a small sample size, his coverage grade of 73.4 topped the team for the season.

Also during his time at Michigan, Reynolds was vocal in advocating for a 2020 season to occur after the Big Ten originally postponed the campaign, and he was outspoken about student-athletes having more of a voice when it comes to NCAA issues.

Reynolds is the 13th Wolverine to have left the program since the beginning of the 2020 season.

Players leaving the program include wide receiver Giles Jackson (undecided), quarterback Joe Milton (undecided), center Zach Carpenter (Indiana), running back Zach Charbonnet (UCLA), punter Will Hart (undecided), quarterback Dylan McCaffrey (Northern Colorado), linebacker Osman Savage (Alabama A&M), linebacker Charles Thomas (undecided), running back Christian Turner (Wake Forest), linebacker Ben VanSumeren (Michigan State), defensive end Luiji Vilain (Wake Forest) and linebacker Adam Shibley (Notre Dame).
