Michigan sophomore linebacker Devin Bush Jr. is just like the rest of us – he doesn’t like waking up early.
When asked what he would do without football, the Florida native said he’d want to be in charge of himself.
“I want to be my own boss,” Bush Jr. said. “I don’t want to work for anybody. That’s the route I want to take. I just want to do a little bit here and there, I don’t want to be all one thing, I want to spread it out.”
But as to why? Well that’s easy.
“So I can wake up whenever I feel like it,” Bush Jr. said.
He said he has to set five alarms in order to make sure he makes it to morning meetings on time, usually spacing them out every few minutes. Sound like you yet?
“I used to always miss school, I used to always miss the bus, not go to class, cry because I didn’t want to go to school,” Bush Jr. said. “I don’t want to be on anybody’s clock.”
When he’s not turning off alarms, Bush Jr. has been preparing for the Air Force triple option defense that the Wolverines will face this weekend.
He said it’s a challenging defense to face, but defensive coordinator Don Brown has stayed on top of his guys – and has been for a while.
“We knew we’d have to have tremendous focus throughout the week,” Bush Jr. said. “We touched on [Air Force’s offense] a bit in spring and fall camp, but it’s here now.”
16 different players ran the ball for Air Force in its last game, totaling 457 yards and seven touchdowns in a 62-0 win against VMI. Falcon quarterbacks threw the ball 14 times, completing 10 passes for 190 yards and two scores.
“They’re not going to pass the ball too many times, but if they do, we got something for them,” Bush Jr. said.
He said one of the most important things will be to trust in his teammates so they can all stay disciplined within the scheme.
“It’s hard, that’s probably one of the biggest things we’re going to have to focus on is not trying to do too much,” Bush Jr. said.
Senior running back Timothey McVey led Air Force (1-0) in rushing in week one (the team had a bye last week) with 10 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown.
