Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield committed to Michigan during a ceremony at his high school.
The 6-5, 250-pounder was once a Minnesota commit but after stopping by Ann Arbor and picking up an offer from Michigan in late March, he decided to open things back up. Throughout the process he showed interest in and took visits to Michigan State, Iowa and Notre Dame as well, but U-M won out over them all.
As the No. 25 player in Michigan, Mayfield is modestly rated but U-M's new offensive tackles coach Greg Frey likes him a lot and prefers players with Mayfield's build and level of athleticism. The lean tackle prospect excels on the basketball court with impressive movement abilities and great feet for his size. Those skills transfer over the football field giving him better quickness and agility than most tackle prospects.
Mayfield is commitment No. 9 for the Wolverines in 2018 and is the second offensive lineman to enter the fray joining Indianapolis Cathedral four-star offensive guard Emil Ekiyor.
