2018 Projection
At 6-6, 229 pounds and with legitimate sub-4.6 speed, Schoonmaker is quite an athlete at the tight end position. As a junior, Schoonmaker played dual-threat quarterback for his high school team and was a real threat running the ball. He also split out wide and played receiver, along with his duties as a traditional tight end. He has the size, speed and natural athleticism to play all over the field in high school.
Because he plays so many positions, he has a long way to go to be a true tight end. He needs to bulk up, get stronger and learn the techniques of being a primary blocker in the running game. He'll also have to acclimate to running routes out of a three-point stance, but he certainly has all the tools to excel at the position once he learns the nuances of being a true tight end.
He likely won't see a ton of playing time as he'll be behind sophomore tight end Sean McKeon and redshirt sophomore tight end Zach Gentry, among others, but he could turn into an impact player down the line.
They Said It
• Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic recruiting analyst Adam Friedman: "I really like his upside. He has a big body and a big frame and runs really well at his size. I’m excited to see how versatile he can be. He’s clearly a guy who can flex out and be a big-time receiving threat. I’m curious to see him as an in-line blocker to see if he can handle the job on the line of scrimmage."
• Hamden Hall Country Day coach Joe Linta: "He’s under the radar … simply because he wasn’t broadcasted. He’s certainly in the top five at his position in the country, though. We played against the No. 2 tight end last year in our playoff game [North Andover (Mass.) Brooks School four-star Patrick Freiermuth] — who has offers all over the place and is going to Penn State — and I’d take Luke over him any day of the week.
"You just can’t find Luke’s kind of speed – he ran a 4.54 and doesn’t even train or anything."
