Michigan redshirt junior tight end Ian Bunting will transfer to another school for his fifth year, he announced today via social media.
This one isn't surprising and has been rumored for some time, what with several tight ends ahead of him on the depth chart. Redshirt junior-to-be Tyrone Wheatley Jr., redshirt junior Zach Gentry, junior Sean McKeon and redshirt sophomore Nick Eubanks were all likely to see more time, and Bunting had caught only 11 career passes for 124 yards. He hauled in one reception for six yards last season.
Bunting showed flashes of his potential, but never emerged as the downfield threat he needed to be to earn time given his size. The 6-7, 252-pounder didn't excel as a blocker and wasn't overly physical.
That said he was a great teammate, and he leaves on good terms.
"I have obtained my release," he wrote. "... This place will always be a special one for me and it has been the experience of a lifetime."
He is the second tight end to leave early in the last two years. Freshman Devin Asiasi announced his transfer at the end of 2016 season to be closer to home and will be eligible at UCLA this year.
