Three days after finished runner-up for the Hobey Baker, Kyle Connor has signed with the Winnipeg Jets, foregoing his final three seasons at Michigan.
A first-team All-American and the Tim Taylor Award winner as the nation’s top first-year player, Connor led the country in points (71) and goals (35), and finished his season on a U-M record 27-game point streak.
Connor’s 71 points matched the most notched by a freshman nationally (with BU’s Jack Eichel in 2014-15) since Maine’s Paul Kariya had 100 points in 1992-93, and represented the most by a Wolverine, regardless of class, since Morrison had 88 in 1996-97, and the second most ever by a Michigan rookie.
Connor is the fourth Wolverine to leave school early since the season ended, joining junior defenseman Michael Downing, sophomore defenseman Zach Werenski and junior right wing Tyler Motte.
The four losses have robbed Michigan of 81 of the 181 goals the Maize and Blue scored this past year, and combined with the departures of senior forwards Boo Nieves and Justin Selman, U-M is hemorrhaging 57.5 percent of its goal-scoring production from 2015-16.
Junior center JT Compher has yet to make his decision but a source inside the hockey program told TheWolverine.com, they were not optimistic he would return to school for his senior year.
