This month’s column for The Wolverine Magazine was tentatively slated to be how the 2018 Michigan team more resembled the 2015 squad than last year’s 2017.
That one’s on hold.
We’re three weeks in now, and we still don’t know a whole heck of a lot about this Michigan team. Some of what we do know should be concerning to Michigan fans, though, after it sleepwalked through the first half against a bad SMU team.
The offensive line, for one. We’ve seen enough of the missed assignments from veterans to know that this is probably going to be an issue more times this year. On Saturday, the glaring mistake was a first half whiff between guard and right tackle that nearly got junior quarterback Shea Patterson thrashed, and might well have put a Wilton Speight or Brandon Peters back in the hospital.
And at the risk of ruining someone’s confidence, at some point someone needs to be sent a message if they’re not going to be accountable. Right guard was an issue again Saturday, and it wasn’t the only one up front.
