Under new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, Michigan’s aerial attack has not flourished as expected.
The Wolverines were supposed to debut a passing spread that would carve opposing defenses by delivering the ball to their talented receivers in space and down the field. Instead, they are 98th in completion rate (56.2%), tied for 66th in yards per attempt (7.4) and 77th in passer rating (132.42). As a result, Michigan has reverted back to its previous running schemes and relied more on the legs of freshman Zach Charbonnet (559 rushing yards, 4.8 YPC, 11 TD) and redshirt freshman Hassan Haskins (426 rushing yards, 5.9 YPC, 2 TD) the past few weeks.
However, one element of Michigan’s passing game that has worked with excellent success all season has been targeting junior wideout Nico Collins deep or in the end zone.
It’s thus a mystery why the Wolverines haven’t made more of an effort to get him the football in those situations.
