Michigan checks in at No. 18 in the first AP poll, the second-highest rated Big Ten team in the preseason poll. The SEC's Alabama, last year's national champion, checks in at an overwhelming No. 1 with 58 of 60 first place votes.

Ohio State is No. 2 after receiving one first place vote. The Buckeyes' schedule sets up for a nice run, with many pundits believing they'll go undefeated. They open with Buffalo, San Diego State, at Cal and Florida A&M before hosting Wisconsin. They travel to Northwestern Nov. 5 in what appears to be their toughest road game until Nov. 30 at Michigan.
The Wolverines and Buckeyes could meet again in the Big Ten Championship Game should each win their respective divisions.
Michigan non-conference opponent Notre Dame (Sept. 7) checks in at No. 14 in the first poll, while Big Ten road opponent Northwestern is No. 22. Wisconsin is No. 23.
Michigan State and Penn State both received votes in the initial poll.
