After serving in a consulting role for Michigan this past season, Erik Campbell is headed back to the coaching ranks, at Connecticut, the Hartford Courant is reporting today.
A former defensive back at U-M from 1984-87 that played with Jim Harbaugh, Campbell was an assistant coach for the Wolverines from 1995-2007, coaching 1,000-yard receivers Amani Toomer (1992-95), Mercury Hayes (1992-95), Tai Streets (1995-98), David Terrell (1998-2000), Marquise Walker (1998-2001), Braylon Edwards (2001-04), Jason Avant (2002-05) and Mario Manningham (2005-07).
Campbell was not retained by Rich Rodriguez in 2008, and would move on to Iowa, coaching for the Hawkeyes from 2008-12 before spending two seasons with the Montreal Alouettes.
He returned to Ann Arbor as a football operations assistant in 2015 and there were rumors he was in line to take over as a position coach if the need arose in 2016.
However, with the exception of DJ Durkin, who left his defensive coordinator position to become the head coach at Maryland, Harbaugh was able to keep his entire staff together. He hired Down Brown to be his new coordinator and he promoted Chris Partridge to linebackers coach.
