The Pylon 7v7 2020 circuit returned to the Dallas-Fort Worth area this past weekend after the circuit’s initial start in North Texas back in early January.
Sunday once again presented an opportunity to watch quality competition between some of the best in Texas and surrounding states. One wrinkle to this past weekend’s action was the schedule being moved to Sunday only as opposed to a two-day event of Saturday and Sunday games.
This change provided a challenge of endurance for all teams competing at Pylon Dallas.
Entering the tournament, the obvious favorite was the defending Dallas Invitational champion and Dallas’ very own, Team Grind. While Grind had a great showing on Sunday, it was actually Lone Star Dream Team out of South Texas that snuck up and stole the show at Pylon Dallas.
The Adidas program comprised of San Antonio and South Texas talent finished with a perfect record of 6-0.
En route to hoisting the Pylon Dallas crown, Lone Star Dream Team had to go through teams like C4 out of the Texoma Region of Texas and Oklahoma, and both Texas Flex squads from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to name a few highlights from their tournament schedule.
One of the standouts from Lone Star Dream Team was Mission Veterans Memorial’s 2021 WR AJ Gonzaque. The South Texas prospect finished the tournament with 13 touchdowns and was named the Offensive MVP as well. Gonzaque dominated the championship game by utilizing his frame and length to help propel his team to claiming the Pylon Dallas crown.
Accompanying the Offensive MVP was his signal caller in 2021 QB Eddie Lee Marburger from Sharyland Pioneer. Marburger did a solid job of finding his receivers throughout the day including the final play of the tournament when he progressed through his read before finding his running back in the back corner of the end zone for a game-winning score as time expired.
Rising 2021 DB Jalen Rainey from San Antonio Brandeis was named MVP on the defensive side of the ball. The tall and lanky prospect provides a big frame on the backside of the defense. Rainey also runs track for his school in the 110 hurdles, and both the 4x2 and 4x4 relays. He holds offers from Louisiana Tech and UTSA.
Along with the championship level play from Lone Star Dream Team, Team Grind and Texas Flex from the Dallas-Fort Worth area stood out. Texas Flex had two teams in the tournament, and both made the semifinal round with one of them advancing to the championship. Flex’s Black squad had the best quarterback play of the tournament with 2021 four-star Garrett Nussmeier having a tremendous day.
Deion Sanders’ Prime Truth squad was also semifinalists on Sunday. Their roster was comprised of high-level talent including Shedeur Sanders, and Blaine & Bryson Green from Allen. Truth was 3-0-1 before falling to Texas Flex’s Black team in a double overtime thriller.
January’s Dallas Invitational champion, Team Grind, was impressive on Sunday but ultimately fell short in bracket play. Instead the day belonged to Lone Star Dream Team, which made sure to leave their mark from South Texas.
